Psalm 40:2

"You are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble. You surround me with songs of victory." NLT

Sometimes I am so thankful for verses like this it's overwhelming. What a gift to be given a promise like this.

During labor it is a mother's natural instinct to find a safe place to birth. She needs a calm, quiet, familiar, warm, trusting environment hidden from danger or trouble that may hurt her or her baby. In this verse we hear that God can most certainly give us that space.

"The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble." Psalm 9:9

If you have any fear over your birth at all, then it could be considered a time of trouble. No matter what the fear is, no matter what the trouble is let God be your protector. Trust Him when He says He is there for you. Prayer and the presence of the Holy Spirit in birth works. It works... I have seen it happen. Sometimes I feel so blessed to have witnessed this truth because I get to share it with others!

When you are prepping for your birth make sure you include some solid Scriptures on the promises God has given to us. Pray with them and connect with God so that your faith in Him grows. Put your fears and let Him be your hiding place from the trouble.

1 Corinthians 10:25

"Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever." TNIV

I want to lay down what the Lord is speaking to me right now. I hope I get this right. lol... :)

Every single pregnant women who has ever walked on planet earth has had to prepare for her birth. Education, exercise, eating right, labor practicing... even doing nothing is a preparation of sorts! But the one thing that makes believers in Christ different from other women, who are with child, is that we have an inside connection with the One who created birth in the first place! We have the ability to seek Him with our childbirth preparation and have better outcomes because of it. Maybe not better outcomes in the terms that world would put them in, but better outcomes in a sense that the Lord will carry us through any difficulty we may have in our births, no matter how difficult!

What are the rest of the women in the world birthing for if not to glorify the Lord? There are so many, MANY crazy birth practices out there... I'm not proclaiming this to pass judgment on birth practices of the world... I don't wish to carry that responsibility. What I am saying is that the choices we make in childbirth, just like in life, say a lot about where our hearts are in our walks with Christ. We, as believers, have a heart for the eternal crown... one that will last us forever. Use this childbirth as a faith builder. Lean on the Lord and let Him show you He is there for you!

I, for one, want that crown of life... do you?

Psalm 37:23

"The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives." NLT

I'll admit that I am guilty of not calling the Lord into my births. (at all with my first and not as much as a should have with my second) He and I have talked about it a lot through prayer and I have moved past it. But I often wonder to myself what things would have been like if I had let Him in. Would I have been so lonely during birth? I was terribly lonely during both of my births and the circumstances were completely different. Would He have directed my education to better suit His will for my births? Would they have been glorifying in His name and would other's have bared witness to His Might in the room with me?

As a doula, I have seen His Power in birth. I have seen prayer change circumstances... I have seen prayer change attitudes of hospital staff and I have seen a  new life be saved. And I have seen a mother, scared out of her mind, scream His name and be blessed. What would my births have been like if I had been committed to delivering my babies in His arms?

I want to encourage you today that my birth stories are testimony for me, they do not make me feel guilty and are used everyday for teaching. Neither should you feel guilty for your own past experiences. But let this next birth be the one that allows you to give full glory to the God Almighty. Who Was and Is and Is to come. Because He absolutely cares about every detail of your life, your pregnancy and your labor. He cares about your feelings and your safety. He cares about your welfare and your baby's. Call Him in and experience the direction only He can give you in birth.

Proverbs 3:6

"Seek his path in all you do, and he will show you which path to take." NTL

This scripture is pretty self explanatory. ;) When you think about your pregnancy and birth... often so many negative thoughts can enter your mind and cause you to stumble on the path the Lord has for your childbirth experience. "I am not strong enough..." "What if I am not a good mother...?" "I am scared..."

God does not want you to think or feel these things! The main reason He does not want you to think this way is because when you do, you are allowing the enemy to have control over your decisions... You may be scared of pain and so you choose to have medication without weighing the risks. You may be so worried about being a good mother that you loose focus on the present time of pregnancy! If you loose your focus... you may end up writing off important decisions like educating yourself or making sure you have the support you need to birth healthily. You may even loose focus on the Lord and His plan for your pregnancy and childbirth! "What is His plan?" you ask... Make a daily habit of praying and lifting your baby up to the Lord and he will begin to speak to you... Seek His guidance above all other information and He will show you, and guide you, on the best plan for your childbirth!

Lamentations 3:44

"Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love." TNIV

I find God showing me scripture like this so much, while I am presenting His Word in relation to childbirth and I believe the reason is this: God wants you to approach your pregnancy and birth with the faith and security of knowing that he has you in his hands. He loves you! Being pregnant is tough... you will go through waves of different emotions throughout your pregnancy and childbirth. The hormone structure your body needs to go through is important for you to properly grow and birth a miracle. It will make you irrational and you will feel grief or despair for no reason at all sometimes simply because of your body's chemistry on any given day. But the Lord knows this... he created this process and he will carry you through it if you will claim it! Memorize this scripture and pray with it for the faith to believe it with all your heart! For He will also show you compassion and He will not leave you to deal with the mess your emotions may make. And at the end of your toils... He will bless you with a present that He has created just for you!

2 Samuel 22:26

"To the faithful you show yourself faithful." NLT

Here is the thing about faith... (and another scripture for you) "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen....." -taken from Hebrews 11:1.

We need to seriously approach birth with faith in Jesus Christ... bottom line. It is the only way to know for sure that you are in GOOD hands throughout your entire pregnancy, labor, birth... and even on to motherhood! God is the constant in your life, he is your shield and your provider. Everything you need to give birth to your tiny blessing, he will supply. Everything you need to be protected from things that will harm you, he will shield. Have faith... faith so powerful that it fills you with the peace that Jesus died for. He died so that you would have the ability to face the trials of your life protected... not so you could let fear of the unknown cause you stress. Give the control to the Lord and relax! :)
